Frequently Asked Questions
What is freight class?

Freight class is a standardized classification system (NMFC) that categorizes commodities for LTL shipping. There are 18 classes ranging from Class 50 (heaviest/densest) to Class 500 (lightest). Class determines your shipping rate.

How is freight class determined?

Freight class is primarily determined by density (weight per cubic foot). Density = Weight / (L x W x H / 1728). Higher density = lower class = lower cost. Other factors include stowability, handling, and liability.

Can I lower my freight class?

Yes. Repackaging to reduce dimensions increases density, which can lower your class. Even reducing box height by 1-2 inches can drop your class and save 10-20% on freight costs.
